Gone Fishin' All Around Alton
It’s not too difficult to find your Friday fish fix this spring!
While we have numerous churches, KC Halls and VFWs that host fish fries, we also have several locally-owned eateries that are known for their delicious seafood. Here is my list of the top restaurants for excellent fish in our region (northern Madison, Jersey and Calhoun counties) in no particular order.
Fin Inn – 1500 W Main St, Grafton
If the name doesn’t already suggest it, visit Fin Inn in Grafton to experience what a great seafood restaurant this place is. My favorite is the pond raised catfish fillet sandwich. You can also try a buffalo fish fillet, an Alaskan whitefish fillet and even a tilapia fillet. While at Fin Inn, take in the amazing view of the four 2000-gallon aquariums that contain fish native to the Mississippi River. Twenty-one of the tables have tableside aquarium viewing windows.
Illinois Riverdock Restaurant – 501 N Park St, Hardin
One of the Riverdock’s specialties is its fried catfish. After having a bite, you’ll know why. While you’re there, make sure to save room for a side of fresh baked pie.
Old Bakery Beer – 400 Landmarks Blvd, Alton
Even though it is more well-known for being a brewery, Old Bakery Beer is offering a Salmon Burger for lunch every Friday and will be rotating fish specials every Friday evening.
Beasley Fish Stand – 1512 W Main St, Grafton
Since it is a river town, there is no surprise that Grafton has several hot fish stands. At Beasley Fish Stand, you can enjoy a hot fish sandwich along with cole slaw and hush puppies near the banks of the Illinois River.
O’ Jan’s Fish Stand – 101 W Main St, Grafton
O’ Jan’s Fish Stand is another spot to grab a fresh, hot fish sandwich just off Main Street in downtown Grafton. It’s a hot spot for tourists and locals to catch one of the better fried fish sandwiches in the area.
Barefoot Restaurant – RR 2 Box 188, Hardin
Stop by the Barefoot Inn in Hardin to enjoy catfish fritters with a view of the Illinois River. The experience is unforgettable with home-style country food served at exceptional prices. And of course, you do get a serene view of the Illinois River.
Roper’s Regal Beagle – 3045 Godfrey Rd, Godfrey
We know that Roper’s Regal Beagle is known for great burgers and steak entrees, but don’t miss out on the seafood! In addition to the seafood options on the everyday menu, Friday specials include a Fisherman’s Platter and fish tacos topped with fresh pico de gallo, cheese and slaw. Additional Friday fish specials might also include dishes such as beer battered cod filets, fried shrimp and breaded crawfish tails.
Grafton Oyster Bar – 215 W Water St, Grafton
Anyone in the region knows that if you’re in the mood for seafood, Grafton Oyster Bar is the place to go.
Enjoy crab, shrimp, lobster, tilapia, oysters (of course), even alligator and more in delectable dishes served alongside a beautiful riverside view.
Bluff City Grill – 424 Broadway, Alton
With the many fish options on the menu, Bluff City Grill is sure to be a hot spot for the duration of Lent. Fish or shrimp tacos, grilled mahi mahi, a seafood platter including tilapia and shrimp and a grilled tilapia dinner are all options for the customers seeking fish in the region.
Captain’s Table Buffet and Journey are both located in the Argosy Casino and offer exactly what you’re looking for. The all-you-can-eat crab legs at Captain’s Table are endless and delicious. Journey offers seafood options such as calamari, shrimp cocktail, a Drunken Seafood dish, seafood pasta, crab cakes and Cajun salmon.
